Khai Nguyen Pagoda is located in Doai Phuong Commune, Ha Noi (previously part of Son Dong Commune, Son Tay Town) and is one of the largest Buddhist centers in the western area of the capital. The pagoda was built in a traditional architectural style blended with modern elements, with a complex that includes the main worship hall (Dai Hung Bao Dien), Tinh Quang Tower, and many large-scale Buddha statues.
Khai Nguyen Pagoda in Son Tay is especially impressive, known for housing what is described as the largest Amitabha Buddha statue in Southeast Asia, standing amid a quiet, peaceful countryside setting. Visit to admire its distinctive beauty, refined architecture, and grand scale—one of Ha Noi’s best-known spiritual tourism destinations.
The most striking highlight of Khai Nguyen Pagoda is its Amitabha Buddha statue—described as the largest in Southeast Asia—standing 72 meters tall (about the height of a 12-story building). The statue’s base platform covers up to 1,200 m². Construction began in 2015, and the work is still ongoing. The structure is solid and the craftsmanship is exceptionally detailed, depicting Amitabha Buddha in the full-lotus seated posture, with a face that radiates compassion and wisdom. In his left hand is a pink lotus bud just beginning to bloom, while his right hand is held in a teaching mudra.
On the center of each palm is a raised Dharma wheel motif, symbolizing profound Buddhist philosophy. The pedestal is a massive lotus base with three layers totaling 56 petals. Overall, the statue embodies many defining features of Vietnamese Buddhist culture.
Getting there is easy. Simply follow Thang Long Boulevard. At the final interchange of Lang Hoa Lac, turn right onto National Highway 21 and continue for about 11 km to reach the pagoda.
