As a coastal province in the Northeast region of Vietnam, Quang Ninh is often likened to a ‘miniature Vietnam’ due to its diverse geography including seas, islands, plains, midlands, hills, mountains, and borders.
Quang Ninh is a region rich in tourism potential, boasting famous attractions. Beyond its abundant and unique tourist resources like Ha Long Bay – a World Natural Heritage and natural wonder of the world, there are many other tourism resources such as beaches, numerous islands, and caves.
Quang Ninh’s tourism also encompasses various cultural values, such as the Yen Tu historical site (Uong Bi), the Tran Kings’ Temple and Mausoleum (Dong Trieu), and the Bach Dang Stake Field (Quang Yen). Famous traditional festivals include the Yen Tu Festival (Uong Bi), Cua Ong Temple Festival (Cam Pha), Quynh Lam Pagoda (Dong Trieu), and Quan Lan Communal House (Van Don), which extend over several months during the festive season. Quang Ninh’s History
Ha Long Bay has been captured by photographers from the 19th to 20th century (Collected Photo)
Quang Ninh is a land with ancient history. Archaeological sites in the Ha Long Bay area reveal prehistoric human settlements dating from 3000 to 1500 BC. This period is characterized by the Ha Long Culture, which emerged with the formation of Vietnam’s first state. During the Hung Kings’ era, present-day Quang Ninh was part of Luc Hai, one of the 15 provinces of the Van Lang state.
Encapsulating a millennium under various independent feudal dynasties, Quang Ninh’s history is also the history of our ancestors’ heroic struggles to defend and build the nation. The most challenging and fierce tests of the nation’s mettle took place on this land. Its greatest military triumphs were shared by the land and people of Quang Ninh. Moreover, in times of peace, this region served as a dynamic center for national development.
As Vietnam succumbed to the overpowering forces of Western colonialism and became a colony under French domination, this resource-rich northeastern land of coal became a typical example of colonial exploitation.
However, from the suffering of oppression and exploitation, this land continued its strong tradition of patriotism and indomitable spirit, writing new chapters in history. This period saw the Mining Area become the cradle of the working class and the start of fierce struggles for freedom and independence.

The mountainous region of Quang Ninh is divided into two areas: the Eastern mountainous region from Tien Yen through Binh Lieu, Hai Ha, Dam Ha to Mong Cai. This area is a continuation of the Wanshan Mountain range from China, predominantly stretching from northeast to southwest. It includes two main mountain ranges: the Quang Nam Chau range (1,507m) and Cao Xiem (1,330m) covering most of Binh Lieu, Hai Ha, and Dam Ha, and the Ngan Chi range (1,166m) in the north of Tien Yen.
The Western mountainous region from Tien Yen through Ba Che, Hoanh Bo, north of Uong Bi township, gradually descends towards the north of Dong Trieu district. This range is a series of slightly curved mountains, often referred to as the Dong Trieu bow range, with Yen Tu peak (1,068m) in Uong Bi and Am Vap peak (1,094m) in Hoanh Bo.
The midland and coastal plain areas comprise low hills shaped by weathering and erosion, forming fields from the lower mountain slopes to the riverbanks and coastline. These areas include Dong Trieu, Uong Bi, north of Yen Hung, south of Tien Yen, Dam Ha, Hai Ha, and part of Mong Cai.
In the river mouths, sedimentation forms fields and low tidal flats, such as in south Uong Bi, south Yen Hung (Ha Nam Island), east Yen Hung, Dong Rui (Tien Yen), south Dam Ha, southeast Hai Ha, and south Mong Cai. Despite being narrow and fragmented, these midland and coastal plains are favorable for agriculture and transportation, making them prosperous residential areas of Quang Ninh.
The sea and islands of Quang Ninh feature unique terrain. Over two thousand islands constitute more than two-thirds of the country’s total (2078/2779), stretching along the 250km coastline in various layers. These include large islands like Cai Bau and Ban Sen, and tiny ones resembling bonsai rocks.
Two entirely island-based districts are Van Don and Co To. Ha Long and Bai Tu Long bays host thousands of limestone islands, originally karst formations eroded by water, forming countless shapes and fascinating caves inside.
When to Visit Quang Ninh?
You can visit Quang Ninh at any time of the year. However, for beach trips, summer is ideal. The peak beach tourism season is from April to August when the weather is beautiful, the sea is clear, and the breeze is refreshing.

An important note for travelers is to check the weather forecast before the trip to avoid any disruptions due to sea storms, and to adjust your itinerary accordingly. If traveling from Hanoi, the journey to Ha Long has been significantly reduced to just over 2 hours.

From Hanoi, the fastest way to travel to Quang Ninh (including cities and districts along Route 18) is by car. Buses to Quang Ninh typically depart from My Dinh bus station, and the journey to Ha Long takes about 4-5 hours. For farther destinations like Hai Ha, Mong Cai, Binh Lieu, the travel time is longer.
Currently, many transport companies have invested in 9-seater limousine services to Ha Long and Mong Cai. Travel time has been significantly reduced thanks to the new Hanoi – Hai Phong – Van Don – Mong Cai highway.
Traveling to Quang Ninh by Train
There is a daily train from Yen Vien station to Quang Ninh (Ha Long station). However, this train is more of a local ‘market train’ (mostly hard seats) and takes a long time to travel (7-8 hours for about 170km).
Additionally, from the station, it’s a considerable taxi ride into the city center. Therefore, traveling by train to Quang Ninh might only be suitable for those with plenty of time and a desire for a unique experience.
Traveling to Quang Ninh by Air
Van Don Airport is operational, and many flight routes connecting Quang Ninh with Central and Southern provinces have been established, making trips to Ha Long Bay, Co To, Quan Lan, and Mong Cai more convenient for travelers from these regions.
Traveling to Quang Ninh by air is much more convenient (Collected Photo)
Expanding international and domestic flight networks to and from Van Don Airport is a key part of the strategic cooperation agreement between the Quang Ninh Provincial People’s Committee and Vietnam Airlines.
Flights to Van Don by Vietnam Airlines will contribute to Quang Ninh’s goal of welcoming 15-16 million tourists, including 7 million international visitors by 2020, and 30 million visitors with 15 million international tourists by 2030. This aligns with the master plan to develop Quang Ninh’s tourism into a spearhead economic sector and transform Quang Ninh into an international tourism center by 2030.

Mangrove clam
The flesh of the mangrove clam is removed and washed in clam water to remove any mud and sand from the mouth, then lifted into a basket to drain. After that, it’s thinly sliced, across the body of the clam, on a dry, clean cutting board.
Mangrove Clam Salad (Collected Photo)
The mangrove clam has a dark or blood-colored liver, so when it’s finely chopped and mixed, the dish of clam meat appears somewhat dark red in color. That’s how you get a plate of mangrove clam salad.
