The Legend of Halong Bay
A View of Halong Bay (Collected Photo)
A widely known and popular legend among the locals tells of ancient times when newly-formed Vietnam was under foreign invasion. The Jade Emperor sent the Mother Dragon and her dragon children to help the Vietnamese people.
As the enemy boats advanced from the sea, the dragons descended from heaven. Immediately, they spat fire, burning the enemy ships, and spat pearls, which formed a formidable stone wall standing majestically between heaven and earth, causing the enemy ships to crash and shatter.
After defeating the invaders and witnessing the tranquil beauty of the land, with lush greenery and hardworking people, the Mother Dragon and her offspring decided to stay where the battle had taken place to protect the people of Dai Viet forever. Today, the place where the Mother Dragon descended is known as Halong Bay, while the area where her children came down is Bai Tu Long Bay.

Here are some scenic spots in Halong Bay and other interesting tourist destinations in Halong for your reference, convenient for planning your trip.
Caves in Halong Bay
Thien Cung Cave
Located near Dau Go Cave, the entrance of this cave is about 25 meters above sea level. This is one of the most beautiful caves in Halong Bay known to man. The cave, spanning nearly 10,000 square meters, has a complex structure, consisting of multiple levels and compartments with very high and wide ceilings and walls.
Inside, you will find countless stalactites and stalagmites in various strange shapes, leading to the creation of legends about the love and separation of Dragon parents, or reminiscent of the Persian Emperor’s mazes in the tale of “One Thousand and One Nights.
Thien Cung Cave, Halong Bay (Collected Photo)
Inside, the cave opens up to a small exit, overlooking a secluded bay surrounded by a series of mountains. Additionally, a set of characters and the number 1901 are found inscribed on the cave wall, possibly marking the first explorer’s discovery of this cave. Nowadays, a sophisticated system of stairs and corridors has been constructed both outside and inside the cave, complete with a lighting system, making it easy for tourists to visit.
Thien Cung Cave is now a popular stop for both domestic and international tourists. To visit, tourists can book a one-day or two-day bay tour, including an overnight stay at a hotel, with a 4-6 hour itinerary.
Dau Go Cave
Dau Go Cave, about 5000 square meters in area, is located 27 meters above sea level, approximately the same age as Thien Cung Cave.
Inside Dau Go Cave, Halong Bay (Collected Photo)
Dau Go Cave: Amidst the ethereal beauty of Halong Bay lies a simple yet evocative cave known as Dau Go Cave. The cave, situated on Dau Go Island, resembles a blue jellyfish from a distance. Climbing 90 stone steps leads to the cave’s entrance. The cave’s dome, about 25 meters high, features hundreds of gigantic stalactites hanging down like an unusual waterfall.
The cave is divided into three main chambers. The outer chamber has a vaulted dome flooded with natural light, creating a massive “oil painting” on the ceiling. This natural masterpiece depicts a primitive landscape of stone forests and multi-colored stalactites, forming shapes limited only by one’s imagination: herds of elephants, bewildered deer, a dozing lion, and a turtle swimming in an endless sea below.
Standing under the dome, one feels like being inside an ancient, majestic castle with grand and imposing architecture. Passing through the first chamber via a narrow passage, the second chamber emerges with dim, mystical lighting and enchanting images. The flickering stone flowers and familiar yet strange shapes arouse a mixture of fear and curiosity. The third chamber of the cave suddenly expands.
At the far end of the cave is a perennial freshwater well, crystal clear and overflowing. Gazing upwards in the dim light, one can see images of an ancient city with a chaotic battle scene frozen in time: elephants and horses in combat, soldiers and weapons intertwined, all petrified in a moment of fury.
Maze Cave
Maze Cave, located 25 meters above sea level on Lom Bo Island and about 2 kilometers southwest of Titop Island, has an entrance that resembles a roof deeply embedded into the island’s side. Archaeologists have identified Maze Cave as one of the early Halong Culture sites, dating back approximately 10,000 to 7,000 years. The most prominent remnants found near the cave’s entrance are Melania snail shells, a species that only lives in streams.
Maze Cave, Halong Bay (Collected Photo)
Accessed through a narrow crevice just wide enough for one person, the interior of Maze Cave reveals many chambers, albeit small and intricately detailed. Stalactites in various shapes, resembling statues and ornate patterns, hang in clusters from the cave ceiling, along with stone lions and bears playfully interacting, and long stone drapes adorning the cave walls. A faint beam of light in the distance marks the path leading to the cave’s exit.
Emerging from the cave and climbing a few sharp, uneven stone steps, one looks down upon a large, circular lake enclosed by mountains. This tranquil, mirror-like lake, with its clear blue waters throughout the seasons, is home to a diverse array of aquatic life such as fish, shrimp, squid, seaweed, algae, coral, and crabs. Beside it lies a grove of ancient trees, often referred to by locals as the “heavenly garden,” captivatingly beautiful.
Climbing over jagged rocks, a broad stone canopy extends out, providing a cool, dry shelter. The entrance is adorned with a thick layer of Melania snail shells, once measuring up to 1.2 meters in thickness and forming a semi-fossilized layer. Recently, a fossilized animal skeleton was also discovered in the cave. Archaeologists have determined that Maze Cave is one of the sites belonging to the early Halong culture’s Neolithic period, dating back 7,000 to 10,000 years.
Virgin and Male Caves
Today, the statue of a girl with long hair flowing down, gazing towards the mainland, still stands in the Virgin Cave. Opposite to Virgin Cave is the Male Cave, also known as the Boy Cave. The statue of a stone petrified young man facing the Virgin Cave remains, with his calls of longing and the sound of him knocking on the rock walls echoing in the air. The remnants of that tumultuous stormy night are still present – the chaotic rock debris within the cave, the roaring wind passing through the rock formations, and the ceaselessly crashing white waves.
Halong Bay Viewed from Drum Cave (Collected Photo)
Drum Cave and Virgin Cave not only captivate visitors with their numerous stalactites and breathtaking scenery, but also draw interest for their poignant legend. In one cave, a horizontally positioned stone formation resembles a girl with flowing hair, reaching out to the sea, hence named the Virgin Cave. The adjacent cave features a tall stalagmite resembling a towering young man gazing into the distance, thus called Drum Cave.
Virgin and Drum Caves have become familiar names to both domestic and international tourists choosing Halong Bay as their destination. These caves allure not only for their natural beauty bestowed by creation but also for the intriguing legend associated with them, sparking curiosity and fascination among countless visitors.
Soi Sim Island
On Soi Sim Island (Collected Photo)
Situated in the Halong Bay tourist area, this small island is approximately 12 km from Bai Chay Bridge and less than 700 meters from the famous Ti Top Island. Soi Sim Island is formed by rock and Feralit soil through a weathering process. The nutrient-rich Feralit soil nourishes a lush and diverse plant life, including numerous endemic flowers and species. Surrounded by the sea, the island boasts a vibrant ecosystem.
The island’s name, Soi Sim, has a fascinating origin. It’s derived from the abundance of myrtle trees (sim trees) found here. During their flowering season, the slopes are awash in a sea of purple, adding to the island’s enchanting beauty. Visitors can also enjoy the sweet taste of ripe, safe-to-eat myrtle fruits while strolling on the island.
Ti Top Island
Ti Top Island’s Beach (Collected Photo)
Ti Top Island, located in Halong Bay, Halong City, Quang Ninh Province, is about 7-8 km southeast of Bai Chay tourist port. The island features a crescent-shaped sandy beach, where the sand is washed clean by the tide year-round.
In the late 19th century, the island was known as Cat Nang. On November 22, 1962, President Ho Chi Minh and Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov visited the island, and to commemorate this event, President Ho named it Ti Top Island. The island has steep cliffs on one side and a gentle slope leading to a white, flat sandy beach at the base.
At the foot of the island, there’s a tranquil, crescent-shaped beach with clean, clear water throughout the year. Tourist boats often stop here for visitors to enjoy swimming or to climb to a halfway pavilion and another at the mountain’s peak for panoramic views.
Currently, the beach has a bar, services for renting swimwear and swimming floats, and freshwater showers. Water motorbikes and parasailing services are also available. Freshwater is transported from the mainland by the Bay Management Board.
Luon Cave
Luon Cave is situated on Bo Hon Island, 14 km south of Bai Chay. The cave is flanked by steep cliffs and serene, clear water, resembling a mirror. At the water’s edge, there is a bow-shaped gate opening at the foot of the island, leading to Luon Cave.
To access Luon Cave, visitors need to use a local boat or kayak (Collected Photo)
Beyond the charming gate, there’s a serene, circular lake surrounded by lush vegetation, steep cliffs with monkeys playfully jumping around, ancient banyan trees providing shade, fragrant orchids hanging down, and a calm, clear water surface teeming with marine life such as shrimp, fish, crabs, and squid.
Luon Cave forms part of an enclosed islet group, accessible from the sea only through a cave opening about 4 meters wide, 3 meters high, and 100 meters long. The brackish lake within the cave is nearly 1 km2, bordered by mountains on all sides. Fossilized freshwater snail shells on the rock walls suggest ancient human habitation, indicating this place was once a deep valley.
While there are not many such caves in Halong Bay, what makes this one particularly captivating to visitors is its natural scenery. The harmonious blend of mountain shapes, water colors, skies, and vegetation seems flawlessly crafted by nature, with seemingly no imperfection.
Surprise Cave (Sung Sot Cave)
Surprise Cave (Collected Photo)
Surprise Cave, located in the central region of the Halong Bay World Heritage Site on Bo Hon Island, is one of the largest and most beautiful caves of Halong Bay. This site is where numerous uniquely shaped islands converge. The path to the cave winds under a forest canopy and over uneven stone steps, offering an exhilarating climbing experience akin to ascending to the heavens.
The cave is divided into two main chambers. The entire first chamber resembles a vast amphitheater, its ceiling adorned with a “velvet carpet” of stalactites, gleaming and sparkling. Stone sculptures, stalagmite elephants, seals, rice stacks, and foliage all seem to quiver in a boundary between reality and dreams. Beyond this wondrous first chamber is the second, accessed by a narrow path.
This second chamber opens up into a different, vast landscape, capable of holding thousands of visitors. Inside, one finds more mystical elements, such as an ancient banyan tree, a sea bear, a dinosaur, and more. Reaching the highest point of the cave, a “royal garden” unveils itself, with a crystal-clear pond set in a picturesque landscape, teeming with diverse flora and fauna, and frequented by monkeys in search of fruits. Located at the heart of Halong Bay’s tourist circuit (Ti Top Beach, Trong Cave, Me Cung Cave, Luon Cave, and Surprise Cave), the French named it “Grotte des surprises” (Cave of Surprises).
Vung Vieng Fishing Village
Currently, only a few families remain in Vung Vieng Fishing Village (Collected Photo)
Vung Vieng Fishing Village, part of Bai Tu Long Bay, lies to the northeast of Vietnam, near the coal mines of Cua Ong – Hon Gai – Cam Pha and the ancient Van Don seaport, upstream from the Mong Cai border crossing and Tra Co beach.
Situated about 25km from the mainland, this village was home to thousands of fishermen who lived in harmony and warmth despite their busy lives. Visiting this village, tourists often get to experience and explore the life of these fishermen, making Vung Vieng a fascinating destination for those visiting Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay.
In the past, boats from Hai Phong had to pass through this fishing village to trade with China. The rough seas often caused cooking pots to sway and lids to come off, leading to the playful nickname “Vung Venh” (unstable). Later, it was discovered that the area inside the bay was calm and protected from the wind, making it an ideal spot to anchor and shelter from storms. Gradually, the name evolved to “Vung Vieng.”
From Vung Vieng, tourists can visit Devil’s Face Island, Bay Gieng area, fish in Vung Ha, explore the primitive forest on Tra Ban Island in Van Don, or visit the small and pristine beaches at the foot of the mountains like those on Ngoc Vung Island or Van Gio Island.
These sites are perfect for small travel groups. Also, there are caves to explore. A few hours by boat from Vung Vieng is Quan Lan Island, known for its architectural marvel, the village temple. This place has many archaeological remains indicating a prosperous past of the Van Don seaport.
The Vung Vieng area, part of the Vung Ha island group, lies within the strictly protected zone of Halong Bay. Previously, the area was inhabited by thousands of fishermen with beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural traditions.
However, since early 2014, Quang Ninh province has implemented a policy to relocate the residents of Vung Vieng fishing village to the mainland. Therefore, currently, only a few fishermen remain, continuing their lives with aquaculture and fishing.

Adventurous Mountain Climbing
Mountain climbing on the sea is considered one of the most natural sports among various climbing forms. For this activity, there is no need for a harness, rope, hooks, or crash pads. All you need is a pair of climbing shoes, a rock face, and the protection of the blue sea. The means of accessing the climbing point is by kayaking.
The goal is to climb the rock faces above the sea and jump into the water when the climb is complete. This sport is quite safe, provided that the climber is a good swimmer and carefully evaluates the landing spot before executing the jump.
However, climbers must consider the height because climbing too high can be dangerous when jumping into the water. Typically, they climb to a maximum height of about 30 meters for training or recreational purposes. For higher climbs or in dangerous areas, a safety harness is required.
With its unique terrain, Halong Bay is becoming one of the first destinations for enthusiasts of this sport. Thanks to Halong Bay, sea cliff climbing is becoming popular in Vietnam.

From sea mantis, many dishes can be made, such as sea mantis blood cake, soup, salad, sweet and sour stir-fry, grilled legs, sea mantis sausage, fried sea mantis, egg soup, and sea mantis hot pot. Stir-fried Snails with Soy Sauce
With various types of snails and different preparation methods, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy stir-fried snails with soy sauce when visiting Ha Long. Diners can dip it in sweet and sour fish sauce or smear the snail meat through the rich soy sauce mixture. Although it’s a stir-fried dish, it doesn’t use fat, so the snails are not greasy but have a crispy and slightly spicy taste.
Ngan Wine
To make Ngan wine, the clams are cleaned and briefly boiled for about half a minute, then cooled. The shells are gently opened to extract the flesh, which is then placed in a cup or jar, and mixed with white wine. The amount of wine added varies according to personal preference. Properly prepared Ngan wine has a light red color, a sweet clam taste, the spiciness of the wine, and a distinctive aroma.
