      Types of Cameras for Traveling

To capture a beautiful photo, it’s not as difficult as you might think (Collected Photo)

Below are some types of digital cameras commonly purchased for travel. You can review the features of each type to better understand them and make a more accurate choice.

      Small Compact Cameras

This type of camera is also known by the more professional term ‘PNS,’ which stands for ‘point and shoot.’ PNS cameras are not only designed to be small, compact, lightweight, and straightforward but also user-friendly. Even if you are a first-time camera user, you’ll quickly adapt to these cameras. You can also adjust settings such as shutter speed, aperture, and focal length.

However, most small compact cameras do not come with a viewfinder, making it challenging to compose your shots as desired. They may also struggle to produce high-quality photos in low-light conditions.

      High-End Compact Cameras

      Compact Cameras (Collected Photo)

A step up from the PNS category, high-end compact cameras are among the most popular travel cameras today. They are like a hybrid between PNS cameras and Mirrorless/DSLR cameras.

These cameras are larger than small compact cameras and come with a fixed lens and a modern electronic viewfinder. They offer flexible control over features, making them suitable for various photography needs.

However, the downside of high-end compact cameras is their bulkiness. When traveling, you’ll need to carry them in a separate bag as they can’t fit easily into pockets like small compact cameras. Additionally, their image sensors are still relatively small.

      Mirrorless Cameras

      Mirrorless Cameras (Collected Photo)

Mirrorless cameras, also known as Mirrorless or Interchangeable Lens Cameras, are cameras that can change lenses but lack a mirror. Compared to DSLR cameras, Mirrorless cameras are more compact and lightweight while offering similar functionality.

The higher cost and less favorable low-light performance are the drawbacks of most mirrorless cameras compared to compact cameras.

      DSLR Cameras

      DSLR Cameras (Collected Photo)

DSLR cameras are the most feature-rich type of camera, capable of producing excellent image quality. These cameras offer flexibility in adjusting settings and are compatible with various lenses. However, their large size and weight can be intimidating for many users. Using a DSLR camera also requires some knowledge to capture high-quality photos.

Which type of camera is most suitable for travel? If you are not a professional photographer or someone with extensive camera knowledge, it’s best to choose Mirrorless cameras. They are compact, user-friendly, and can still capture beautiful moments and even shoot videos effectively. It’s not advisable to opt for a DSLR camera if you are not well-versed in its operation.

      Considerations When Choosing a Camera

      Budget Considerations

First, remember that besides purchasing the camera body, you’ll also need to budget for accessories such as memory cards, a camera bag, spare batteries, filters, and even a tripod and lenses. Next, think about the potential risks you may encounter during your travels, such as theft or loss. You should consider how comfortable and safe you feel carrying equipment worth how much.

For a budget of under $800, consider buying point-and-shoot cameras (also known as compact or travel cameras) – cameras equipped with fixed lenses, fixed shutter speeds, and apertures, or use this budget to upgrade your smartphone for photography purposes.

If you have between $400 and $800 at your disposal, you can definitely invest in a mirrorless camera (a subcategory of Interchangeable Lens Cameras – ILCs that do not use a mirror mechanism).

If you have more than $800, you’ll have the capability to purchase professional-grade DSLR cameras with advanced shooting features.

      Weight and Accessories

Camera accessories can range from minimal, fitting into just a few pouches, especially for compact cameras or smartphones. You can also opt for mirrorless cameras – lightweight but still allowing for lens interchangeability.

However, for professional-grade cameras, those who truly want to capture high-quality photos may need to carry a heavy kit bag weighing up to 9 kg.

Some cameras offer interchangeable lenses and other convenient accessories. If a part gets damaged, you can replace that specific part rather than buying a whole new camera.

      Camera Manufacturers

There are many types of cameras for you to choose from. Below are the types, brands, and levels of ease of use – from simple to complex.

      Smartphones

Any smartphone nowadays is capable of capturing relatively good photos (Collected Photo)

When it comes to convenience, portability, and speed, smartphones always take the lead. A modern smartphone has all the basic camera functions, even photo editing capabilities, and allows for quick sharing on social media without the need for a computer. However, these devices may not excel in close-up photography or low-light conditions.

      Canon Cameras

Canon cameras offer a wide range of options (Collected Photo)

Canon travel cameras are highly regarded for their design and product features. When it comes to Canon cameras in Vietnam, users are already familiar with the brand, thanks to the convenient button layout.

Common mode settings can be easily configured and adjusted using the LCD screen, making it user-friendly even for beginners. Therefore, there is a large number of enthusiasts who prefer the Canon brand.

      Fujifilm Cameras

      Fujifilm Cameras (Collected Photo)

Fujifilm cameras exude a classic charm, quite distinct from Canon or Sony, making them suitable for those who appreciate retro style. It’s easy to recognize cameras from this brand. Fujifilm is best known for its convenient and high-quality compact cameras that produce fantastic film-like photos. Notably, many of their products feature modern APS-C and X-Trans sensors that allow for continuous autofocus while maintaining sharpness.

      Sony Cameras

      Sony Cameras (Collected Photo)

Whether you’re capturing moments with friends or the breathtaking beauty of a sunset, Sony cameras make it easy for you. Sony cameras stand out for their compact size, lightning-fast autofocus, and exceptional zoom capabilities. Operating a Sony camera is also incredibly user-friendly. In terms of features, they provide a full range of adjustments and lens aperture settings.

      Nikon Cameras

      Nikon Cameras (Collected Photo)

Like Canon, Nikon is also a brand from Japan. Founded in 1971, this brand used to specialize in producing film cameras but now primarily focuses on digital cameras and DSLRs.

Nikon cameras, in general, are highly regarded for their diverse range of sizes, catering to various needs. Some travel cameras from Nikon are so compact that they can easily fit in a pocket. Additionally, they deliver good image quality thanks to the application of various cutting-edge technologies.

      Olympus Cameras

      Olympus Cameras (Collected Photo)

Olympus is a leading camera brand from Japan, known globally for its OM-D series, although in Vietnam, Olympus products are not as widely recognized. Despite not being as famous as some other brands, Olympus cameras boast impressive quality.

Similar to Fujifilm cameras, Olympus cameras feature elegant and stylish classic designs. One of the strengths of this brand’s cameras is that many of them come with a 3-inch flip screen, which is particularly suitable for selfie enthusiasts.
