Rich in cultural heritage, the Hoanh Bo district (Quang Ninh) also surprises visitors with its pristine and majestic nature. Approximately 30km from the center of Hoanh Bo district, Tan Dan commune is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the district, notably Dong Lut Waterfall, Khe Kho Waterfall, and Khe Muc Waterfall (Dragon Waterfall). Khe Kho Waterfall is located in Dong Mung village, Tan Dan commune, Hoanh Bo district, Quang Ninh province.

The second tier of Khe Kho Waterfall is about 40 meters high, cascading from the towering rock cliffs into two main streams, creating a majestic and untamed scene amidst the mountains and forests, unforgettable to any visitor. The third tier, the highest but gentlest, resembles a series of staggered steps leading up to the upper reaches of the stream.

According to experienced backpackers, summer is the ideal and most wonderful time to visit Khe Kho Waterfall. Additionally, the weather is quite cool and comfortable, making it perfect for combining your trip with other tourist activities like visiting Ha Long Bay, Mong Cai, or Binh Lieu.

Many young people who enjoy the thrill and novelty of backpacking prefer to travel by motorcycle. Be aware that the road to the waterfall is rough and rocky, so it’s advisable for men to drive a manual or semi-automatic bike for easier navigation.
- 6 AM: Depart from central Hanoi, take the old QL5 route to Quan Toan Bridge, turn left onto QL10, and head straight to the center of Uong Bi City (150km). You can also consider the QL18 route, which might be shorter in distance but similar in time.
- 8:30 AM: Arrive at the Clock Tower in Uong Bi City, stop for breakfast and rest, and then visit the market to buy supplies for a barbecue at the waterfall.
- 9:30 AM: Leave from the Clock Tower to Que Ha Restaurant (find it on Google Maps) (27km), then go straight to the first intersection and turn left (note: turning right will lead you astray). Continue to the next intersection and turn left again, following the electric pole (this will be indicated in the photo). Keep going until you reach another intersection. Here, turn left onto the very rough road leading to the waterfall (the right side leads to a military tunnel). It is advisable to park your bike here on the side of the road and lock it securely.
- Then, continue on foot. After crossing the first stream, head towards the second one. At the next intersection after the second stream, turn left (going right will lead you astray). Continue up the slope and at the next intersection, turn left again and head downhill. Slightly veer to the right through a small eucalyptus forest to reach the waterfall (there’s a local hut near the waterfall).
Although challenging, the beauty of the waterfall at the third level, requiring an additional 200m climb, makes it all worthwhile. Once you see the waterfall, all the fatigue will disappear, replaced by awe at the natural masterpiece bestowed upon Dong Mung village. By noon, after reaching the waterfall, start a fire to grill chicken, meat, and fish that you’ve brought from the market.
- After lunch, around 2 PM, head to the waterfall for a swim. It’s best to bathe early, as the water can get cold later in the afternoon.
- By 4 PM, clean up the area, descend the mountain, and return to your vehicle. If you’re still feeling energetic, you can drive back to Hanoi; otherwise, consider spending the night in Ha Long to enjoy another day of exploration before returning home.

If you’re not confident about finding your way, consider hiring a local guide.
- It’s best to visit on a sunny day when the waterfall is clear, making for beautiful photos.
- On rainy days, the water can become murky. Since there’s no designated parking area, be sure to bring a lock for your vehicle.
- Wearing sturdy sandals is recommended for crossing streams and walking.
- Mobile phone signal can be weak in the area, increasing the risk of getting lost, so it’s crucial to stick close to your group.
